GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Vancel and Lyerly book covers the families from the ancestor who first arrived in America to about the mid 1800's. Some families are continued until the mid to late 1900's.

For the Vancel family, the first member that John H. Doty lists is the immigrant Johann Adam Wentzell (Wenzsell, Wensel). The Vancels were Dunkards and came from that settlement along the Rhine River in Germany called "Palatine" also called "The Protestant Palatinate." Johann Adam Wentzell and his family left Germany on the ship Patience. They sailed from Rotterdam to Cowes, England and left Cowes for America on August 11,1750.

For the Lyerly family, the first member that John H. Doty lists is the immigrant John Christopher Lyerly (1710-86). He more than likely was the son of Solomon Lyerly (ca 1681) of Lake Constance, Duchy of Wurttenburg, Germany. It is believed that Johann Christopher Lyerly was born about 1710 near Lake Constance. He came to America on The Richard and Mary, landing at Philadelphia on 9-30-1754. He moved to Culpeper Co., VA where at least one of his children, Zachariah, was born. Most of this work centers on Zachariah (called Old Zach), of North Carolina and Illinois, (1756-1847) and his descendants.

John Hubert Doty published the original book in 1980 and an updated version was reprinted in 1991. Both editions were entitled Vancel and Lyerly Families in America.

Most of these families had members who served in the Revolutionary War. As such many of the family members are eligible for membership in the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) or the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). John Doty helped many obtain membership in these organizations with this family research.

The following is a list of families that this book covers. The family names are given on most of the individuals. The first names (or given or "Christian" names) for the two major families are listed. In addition, the first names for those who helped John H. Doty in the collection of the material are listed. The major spelling variations for the two major families are listed.

DESCRIPTION OF LATEST BOOK

The latest edition of this book is entitled The Vancel and Lyerly Families: Revolutionaries in America, 2nd edition. MaryAnn Doty Rizzo, John's daughter (that's me), revised and edited the materials left by Dad after his death. I re-titled the book to reflect the fact that both families participated in the Revolutionary War in America. I renumbered the individuals according to the system Dad used for the Doty family. I then did the cross-references using these numbers. This adds clarity to the book and to the system.

The revised text contains 298 total pages of text, this includes 17 pages of introductory material. There are about 61 pages of information on the Vancel families and about 120 pages of information on the Lyerly families. There are 64 pages of historical background information added to enhance the reader's understanding of comments within the text. As in the former editions of the book, a section of the book deals with material from the late Mrs. Edith Rendleman.

This book is available in a B&W test format. To access the sales site, click here. It sells for $20. They print the book and ship it directly to you. This makes it easier all the way around.

This book has no colorized images to post.
