GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The book Pioneer Families of Colonial America covers the families from the ancestor who first arrived in America to the mid to late 1900's.

For the Doty family, the first member that John H. Doty listed was the immigrant Edward Doty (Doten), who came to America on the Mayflower.

John Hubert Doty published the original book in 1977 and an updated version was reprinted for close family members only in 1994. Both editions were entitled Pioneer Families of Colonial America.

The following is a list of families that this book covers. The list is by family name only.

• The Barr, Chambers, and Cannull families are related to the Sowards and Tipswords. They are included in the updated book The Soward & Tipsword Families: Rebels, Natives, Hunters & Settlers. It was copyrighted in 2012 and is available for purchase.

• In depth information on the Tipswords and Soward families is available in the revised Tipsword book. The information currently in this book is less than the information of the first edition of the book.

DESCRIPTION OF LATEST BOOK

The latest edition of this book is entitled Pioneer Families of Colonial America: From Native Americans and the Mayflower to the Irish Canadians, 2nd edition. MaryAnn Doty Rizzo, John's daughter, (that's me) revised and edited the materials left by my father after his death. I re-titled the book to reflect the fact that the families come from a variety of backgrounds.

The revised text is in two volumes.

Volume One contains 547 total pages of text, this includes 523 pages of main text and 24 pages of introduction material. This volume covers the Doty family from Edward Doty, who came over on the Mayflower to 2003. For some lines, it covers 13 generations. It is designed to get the reader "close" to himself or herself so that he/she can fill in the gap, if there is any. The book also contains some background information on historical events, people, and attitudes. Volume One sells for $25.

Volume Two contains 418 pages of text, this includes 255 pages on the families covered, 10 pages of introductory material, 153 pages of graphics including: copies of documents, pictures of family members, tombstones and places of interest and a bibliography.

Included in Volume Two are the Logsdons, who have a connection with George Washington. Also included in this book are the Irish Canadians (the Kellys, Sullivans, Fitzpatricks, and Colepaughs); the King and Miller families; the Force and Cavanee families; the Logues; the Wrights; and the Dials. It also includes a bit on the Soward and Tipswords. (More on these families are discussed at the Soward site). Volume Two sells for $20.

Both volumes contain some family stories and lore and some historical information. Although, more is available in Volume One than in Volume Two.

The two volumes are available in print format at the following sites:

Volume One:

Volume Two

These books are printed in B&W to save cost. These books are printed in the USA. Copies of the colorized images are available at the following sites:
